Eventually the outpouring of poison ceased, and Oates retired in glory to contemplate another victim. Annunciata was unable to speak for herself, but Clovis rose on the third day to speak on her behalf, primed with his questions and armed with witnesses, the fruit of his labours those past weeks. He was hopeful, for Oates's testimony had been full of contradictions. One by one he brought them up, and one by one they were cut down. He had brought witnesses from the Low Countries to swear what was well known amongst the informed, that Oates had been at St Omer on 24 April, and therefore could not have been at the Consult. The witnesses spoke well, but when they had finished the judge dismissed their evidence on the grounds that they were Jesuits, and therefore their oath could not be trusted — they would lie in the cause of their church.
